election season is coming. are your communications ready?

It may be the old newspaper reporter in me, but I am a big fan of election seasons. All elections are interesting because of how they bring focus to community priorities and public discussion. But of all the opportunities to vote available, it’s local government elections I like the most.

Local governments provide so many services and programs that are critical to our daily lives, making these elections important and tangible. The people running for office are often neighbours or people we know who are stepping forward to help keep ‘our place’ running.

Elections are also interesting as a communications professional, as they create a unique environment for communications and public engagement. Both officially and unofficially, there are things that happen during campaign season that all communicators are – or should – be prepared for. So, as we march towards BC’s next local government election date (Oct. 17, 2026!), here are ZINC’s top three takeaways for communications planning learned over the many election seasons we’ve weathered:

1. be prepared

There’s an increased risk that anything can become political. It’ll surprise you what can become a communications issue as people start moving towards an election. Connections are made where you don’t expect them. Alliances are forming. Megaphones are being pulled out of closets. Because of this, paying extra attention to chatter and preparing for risks is key in the months before the vote.

    2. know the rules

Campaign periods require extra care to ensure communication about projects doesn’t inadvertently become campaign material for incumbent candidates. Make sure you’re following required rules and timing during the mandated period, specifically around announcements and celebrations.

      3. make the most of it

Slower news cycles create unique opportunities. Make the most of news outlets seeking non-election news by pitching a safe story or topic during this time. Or take these quieter weeks to prepare for post-election period when everyone is in a hurry to share updates before the end of the calendar year!
